According to the nonpartisan Tax Foundation, California has the highest corporate tax rate in the West. The state taxes companies a flat rate of 8.84 percent, which is lower than only nine states in the union. The video is a quick primer on the problems with high corporate tax rates on an international scale, but the same principles apply for the states. While conventional wisdom usually tells us that the poor and lower middle class will thrive if the government taxes corporations, the notion couldn't be more untrue. A high corporate tax rate forces those companies to hire fewer employees, reduce benefits, and pay their employees less. At the same time, the companies have to charge more for their products, which once again, hits the poor the hardest.
