San Diego Waterfront

Increasing public access to the bay front and public space for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.

A new vision for San Diego's waterfront suggests that planners design a cohesive network of public spaces and transportation options, complemented by commercial development, including architectural icons that maximize the enormous potential of our bayfront.

By creating “A Vision for San Diego’s Waterfront,” the California Independent Voter Project has brought forward a substantive portfolio of waterfront information and options that can be used by the public and the growing number of civic and community leaders who see the need for a new vision for San Diego’s waterfront. This vision would have the core principles of:

Recognizing the critical role of the marine terminals in moving goods in, out, around and through San Diego while protecting and expanding waterfront-dependent commerce, and the jobs and revenues associated with it.Increasing public access to the bay front and public space and amenities for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. Highlighting the critical importance of the airport in linking multiple forms of transportation and moving San Diego towards more accessible and convenient public transit. Making the working waterfront and all remaining waterfront parcels as accessible, economically successful and aesthetically pleasing as possible.

While there is ample time to debate specific designs and select the best sites for essential elements, only a short window of time remains to preserve the opportunity to build an enduring waterfront designed to serve the public that owns it.

This website provides the resources helpful to the process, news about the future of the waterfront, and links to other organizations and information helpful to broadening understanding of San Diego’s waterfront issues.
