Proposition 1A - High-speed Rail Bonds

The passage of Prop 1a will insure the issuance of $9.95 billion in bonds that will fund a $40 billion high-speed railway system in the state that is estimated to be completed in 2030. The train will transport passengers from San Francisco to Los Angeles in as short as 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Pros

A “Yes” vote means that you support spending $9 billion on the high-speed rail system and another $950 million on other state and local rail systems.

  • Make California the leader of train travel innovation in the United State.
  • Create thousands of jobs that will help spur the local economy in many cities across the state.
  • Will curb harmful carbon emissions by taking more than 100 million people off the road.
  • Will save travelers the trouble of taking uncomfortable buses, long train rides, and all the hassles of plane travel
Cons

A “No” vote means that California would not spend money to build a high-speed rail system and another $950 million on other state and local rail systems.

  • Prop 1A is not economically feasible with so many other budget problems plaguing California.
  • The cost is subject to change, so taxpayers don't know exactly what they will end up spending in the long run until it's too late.
  • Simple bad timing: The problems on Wall Street and the economic hard times force the state to focus on more pertinent issues than high speed rail travel.
  • No guarantee that the project will ever be completed.

This is just an easy answer

This is just an easy answer for a simpleton...yes its the immigrants who are not letting us build a super speedy train...it has nothing to do with it!!!

"Basic economics dictates

"Basic economics dictates government infrastructure spending as a remedy to recession. Perhaps the best examples are the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, built during the Great Depression with bond money."

Really now? Economics is the study of scare resources which have alternative uses. It does not dictate and is not a manual on how to run a commerce-clause federalist government. Do you think that there would ever be a recession anywhere in this world if the remedy was so simple? That's assuming every nation or state had funding at hand for such a remedy, which California does not, by the way.

Dudeee!

Whhaatt?!?! How much? these people are out of their minds! U.S. cannot even afford this! It may give more jobs but it is still spending way too much money on a project that might never be completed. HAVE SOME TYPE OF COMMON SENSE!

"Bad Timing" is actually "Perfect Timing"

The argument against, that this is "bad timing" is highly inaccurate. Basic economics dictates government infrastructure spending as a remedy to recession. Perhaps the best examples are the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, built during the Great Depression with bond money.

This is the perfect time to invest in our transportation future and stimulate the economy by creating jobs, etc. This should be viewed as an economic stimulus package! and much more appealing than one for wall street, at that.

Who in there right mind will

Who in there right mind will spend 9 billion on a project that has no end date or "No guarantee that the project will ever be completed".

Not me!

How about Some relevant comments?

How about some constructive, relevant comments regarding Prop 1A instead of a plug for anti-immigration reform (completely unrelated to the specifics of this bill)?

I would love a robust public transit system. Is it really bad timing for Prop 1A or can we manage it at this time?

If the state would get it's

If the state would get it's act together and finally shut the door on rampant illegal immigration we might be able to stop the bleeding of the social welfare programs. When illegal immigrants get sick they go to the hospital and ring up the bill the same as anyone else - except they don't pay for it, we tax payers do!

The same is true for schools. They're over crowded with many schools having 3-4 kids sharing a book and/or desk! Take a look at the population demographics and see just where these kids are coming from! How is it I encounter kids that speak barely any English? Gee - I wonder where they're coming from???

It's great to have ambitions to care for people elsewhere in the world, but for gods' sake we need to get our own act straight first. You can't do much when you've "broke the bank."

So in conclusion - get rid of the "ILLEGAL" immigration problem and you'll free up countless amounts of wasted money to do things like this rail system!
